Funchal Airport is the main airport serving Madeira. It is sometimes also referred to as Madeira Airport or Santa Catarina Airport.

The airport first opened its doors in 1964.  Funchal Airport became known around the world for its very short runway. It represented quite a challenge for some pilots when trying to land. The airport is also surrounded by mountains meaning there was an extra addition to the challenge.

The runway was finally extended by two hundred metres in 1985 before being rebuilt to double its original size in the year 2000. The new structure of the runway has won many awards.

There is a taxi rank just outside the airport as well as a bus service run by a company called Sam. There are six car hire Funchal desks at the airport.

On average over three and a half million passengers use Funchal Airport every year. There are sixteen check in desks, four baggage reclaim areas and four gates. Funchal Airport is situated sixteen kilometres from the port of Funchal.
